Xmas Break

Its that time of year again. Zombie Undead are closing up for the break so expect no more blogging for a week or two. During this time i shall continue to work on storyboards and shot lists and scheduling. Kris continues to edit and reherse Jay. Gav spends a gore filled fextive season messing with latex. Next year hopefully brings us completion of filming on Zombie Undead and the première in winter. Keep checking the blog for tutorials, make up guides and more.

Hope Xmas is all good and here's a little picture by the awesomely talented Kit Cox - of myself.

Concept Art

Lee Milmore has provided Zombie Undead with some great artwork since the conception of the film. Here's one of my favourite pieces, a goresome bloodbag. Check out his website to see how versatile and skilled this guy is. He is also responsible for the design of the website.

Day 04 Pictures

Yep that was an awesome day and here's the pictures to prove it. The first couple of hours were spent creating organised chaos. First priority's for me were to organise the extras and make everyone aware of what was required. As with any actor I feel its vital they understand their role and more than that are happy with what they are expected to do otherwise this will show on screen. I need to both have a clear vision and be able to communicate this effectively. On a low/no budget movie especially as director I need to have the technical knowledge of film making together with the personal skills to communicate effectively with cast and crew. I got good feeback on the day so lets hope alls good with this!

While doing this Kris organised the extras into groups and dressed the set. Neill ( DP ), Steve Shovlar ( steadycam ) and myself finalised shots for Steve and the route he was to take around the bodies. It was a pre-zombie scene so Gav and Rachael's make-up was limited to burns and wounds. However with 20 extras they had their work c
ut out - between them they did a great job.

As the morning progressed i knew we'd nailed this scene. The vibe on set was awesome and everyone had a great time - especially when Dr Riley, Clive Ward, slipped on the bloody floor with needle in hand Carry On style. On time we wrapped the crowd scenes around 1. In the haste i forgot that Steve Bull, Mark, had finished his scenes for the film. So apology's for not mentioning that on the day and thanks Steve! some great acting on the day and kudos to Rod for his masterly finger clicking and Ruth for her multiple falls on a hard surface. Respect!

Today emphasised to me the importance of compramise. The films already shot in my head but on the day compromise's had to be made. I had to make decision's, sacrifice some things and move on - its coverage we need.

After lunch we set up the scene for Sarah waking up. This was an easier shoot than the morning but essential we got it in the bag. Ruth as usual was awesome. An intense day overall but a great days shooting.

The Big Day

Day 04 looms large and I'm really looking forward to this one. We've got an awesome scene to shoot in the morning - the arrival of Sarah, Mark and Steve at the evacuation centre. The total chaos of the patient overspill due to the terrorist bomb will be a great scene to capture. Its a three camera shoot, with Steve Shovlar joining the crew on steadycam, with 5 cast members and 25 extras.

After this scene we need to move upstairs to film Sarah waking up and leaving her room. A far easier scene to shoot we just need the light to stay.

I'm seriously looking forward to this test of my directing, and the combination of the make up, camera work and acting. Bring it on!

Pre Day 04

Had a last minute script check and run through for next Saturdays big shoot. Myself, Kris, Matt and Gav from DWE were joined by Barry Thomas ( Steve ), Rod Duncan ( Frank ), Steve Bull ( Mark ) and Clive Ward ( Dr Riley ). We went through the scenes to be shot and whether there were any foreseeable problems. Much laughter and healthy debate was had. This can only bode well for the film as on such a low budget cast and crew comradery is a must.

Titles Edit

Kris has been working on the edit for the footage shot so far and the rough first edit looks awesome. We're shooting pretty much chronologically so he's working on the first scenes - the bomber leaving the train station and planting the dirty bomb. Some great use of speed ramping and time reversal in there. These effects were not just for visual flare but to represent the convoluted state of the bombers mind and work a treat.

The back story for the plot is set in these first few minutes which are cut into the film titles. How we are distributing the film necessitates a quick start to the feature so we keep viewers attention. We're using the titles from Zombie Undead - The Short Film as they have a great cinematic feel to them and their dirty, grainy feel fits in with the start of the feature nicely.

Day 03

Heres some pictures from the third day of shooting. The shoot covered Sarah's journey and arrival at the evacuation centre and is one of only three days of external shooting. Luckily the forecast held and there was no rain until later. As we all met at the Hawthorn building at DMU we shot the car pulling up and Sarah, Mark and Steve getting out first. Then we were off to the countryside. On the way the majesterial Neill Phillips, DP, took the internal shots in the car of the rush to the evacuation centre. A great dying scene with Steve Bull, Ruth King and Barry Thomas was caught.

I'd also like to gve a warm welcome to Farid. He jumped in at the last minute for Carl Homer who's wife has just had a baby ! Congratulations Carl and welcome aboard Farid. His first day invloved squashing himself in the cars boot to record sound. Thats dedication. Hopefully we'll have both Carl and Farid for the next days shoot.

As usual some lovely camera work by Neill Phillips who somehow manages to operate the camera and also takes stills - see the awesome shot above. Rain put paid to the car mount we were hoping to use but we still got the coverage.

Day 02

We were outside the location for the second day of shooting at 8:45 - a fairly civilised time. As location high on security we have to be assembled and in by 9 with no stragglers but….most of us there on time. A no show from one person but luckily they’re not vital to the shoot. Neill and Carl, DP and sound respectively, were stuck behind a crash on the M1 but arrive safe and sound on time.

As we are shifting stuff inside find out
that Alex + 1 have gone off to get some breakfast. Cant hang around so head on up. As Adrian, Conran Zombie, has to leave by 1 PM we need to shift to get his shots done.

First shot on the log was SARAH coming out of the room after she has woken up. A tough shot to light as we are 2 floors up and cant shine the lights through the windows. Apart from that a pretty standard shot and we were on to the first zombie shot of the film. Gav had spent the first 2 hours making up Conran Zombie and he looked goresome. With the first zombie shots in the bag its on to the zombie attack.

This is the first big SFX of Zombie Undead and involved a machete attack to the zombies head. Gav did numerous tests for this one and came up with the idea of using a polystyrene head with a whole cut out and stuffed with a blood filled condom. Put a wig over it all and smack, when the machete hits the 'head' gore flies everywhere. Only had a couple of chances at this one due to time and supplies. First one worked ok but the second nailed it. Trouble with the polystyrene is that the machete bounces, We'll cut sharp before the bounce and get a pick up close up of blood splatting Sarah's face. A tense shot as well as Ruth had to hold the head above herself as the machete ( a real one ) was smashed into the head. A pressure shot for all and every cast and crew member was lined up to watch this one.

With that nailed it was onto the start of the dialog between Jay and Sarah. We kept pretty much to schedule through the day, a couple of Douglas Adams deadlines went wishing past but we did catch up.

We shot listed and storyboarded for more than we shot. The reason for this is two fold. Firstly events may have transpired that forced us to shoot in a different order than planned. For example on the Zombie Undead trailer shoot one of our two make up artists failed to show. With no warning it was too late to find a replacement so Gav, our SFX lead, had to do all the make up plus special effects and scenes were shot out of planned order. Secondly we may have shot faster than expected - hey miracles happen. However this has to be countered by the fact that you don’t want people hanging around for scenes that wont be shot that day. It’s a tricky compromise and one which I hope will become easier as the shoot progresses. Time to check out the rushes.

The Day Before

Tomorrow we shoot Day 02 of Zombie Undead. While its the second day of filming its the first full day for Zombie Undead. Also first dialog and first special effects. Its gonna be a big big day! One good thing though its all internal so don't have to worry about the weather. We've got a big shot for a machete in the head so that's the one we need to nail. Chronologically that's the first zombie shot so its got to count. Nothing more to do now apart from wait .. see you tomorrow.

Script Rehersals

For a while we have known the principle cast members so the time for script re-throughs has come. This is a great part of the film making process its the first time you get a physical representation of the project. It comes to life before you as what once were words are now actions, feelings and emotions. Even at this early stage what actors bring to the table is enormous. They breath life into the characters and transform the script into a film.

The initial read throughs concentrated on the three leads - Jay,Sarah and Steve. Kris led the session with movement and action taking second stage to the cast finding their characters and seeing what works and what doesn't within that. We skipped over action scenes to concentrate on the words and their delivery. A big smile was never far off my face today as this great cast tweaked out some great aspects from a great script. It was great to see Barry's depiction of Steve with its restrained comedy delivery. The interaction between the cast was great to see with each bouncing off the others to create, even at this stage, a fluid dynamic.

We picked up some on errors such as Jay referring to Sarah by name even though they haven't been introduced. Previous to this we had trimmed and condensed plus combined and removed a superfluous character. Also a characters lines were increased as there role shined and benefitted from more lines.

Awesome work people!

Frank Cast

The last major character was cast today in the shape of Rod Duncan. Although not one of the main three leads it is a substantial part and the character of Frank carries the movie in the middle section and required an actor who could provide gravitas to the role. And Rod has this in spades. Rod came to my attention a while ago and after meeting him in person i knew he could do the job.

In addition to acting Rod is a respected author. If you haven't checked out his work yet then what are you waiting for - The Riot Trilogy.

Sarah Cast

Goresome news. The role of Sarah has been cast. Several weeks ago DWE and Barry Thomas posted an add in Shooting People requesting a female lead. From the start we made prospective applicants aware that it was a non paid position and that we would prefer a local actress. As the film will be shot across a period of time we envisioned problems with cast and crew travelling long distances. After a few 6 o'clock starts to travel across country to film blood and guts all day then a long journey back, the enthusiasm may wane.

After sifting through the replies Kris settled on a couple of likely prospects. Through emails and phone conversations the best candidate appeared to be Ruth King. Ruth has a history in theatre and was keen to move into film. Only one problem - she lives in Manchester and its a fair trip from there to Leicester. Many discussions ensued over the weeks and a decision took time. However Ruth's sheer enthusiasm for acting and the project, her impressive acting ability and her positive attitude really won us over. So welcome on board Ruth!

Everyone involved in this kind of low/no budget film needs to be really into the project and Ruth certainly is. We went with our gut instinct and are convinced this will work out.

Location Secured

Its in the bag! Phewww. After months and months of meetings and discussion i've nailed an awesome location - Leicester De Montfort University. The University has given us the green light to use several buildings as locations for the film. One is an awesome Victorian construction with high ceilings and wide corridors. This is a massive step for the project and things will begin to fall into place now.

Thanks must go to the number of people within the organisation who have helped Zombie Undead secure this location - Martin Hargreaves, Mambia Sambhi, Dave Paget, Chris Wyatt, Emma Ward and Marie Basford. There were more people than this even involved and this goes to show the amount of networking and work needed to source a location.

Location News

The confirmation of a location is getting closer. I dont want to count my chickens but i'm pretty confident with this one. Looking back i've put in a helluva lot of work to get this far so fingers crossed.

The invaluable lesson i've learnt is you have to network, network, network. You need as many contacts as you can. No-ones going to give you something on the first meeting so be prepared to persevere, smooze and spend ridiculous amounts of time to get what you want.

Green Screen Shots

Heres some of the shots from last weeks green screen work. Used the awesome Keylight plug-in on After Effects to strip out the green screen. The second still has a transparent background in AE ( jpgs don't have this feature ) so you can use the background plate. Add in an explosion, light spill, screen shake and you have it. Almost sounds easy doesnt it ?

Day 01.5

Fresh as a dustbin after the Zombie Fest weekender i spent the morning at De Montfort University green screen facility. DMU had kindly given us permission to use the equipment for free. I also had two great technicians, Mambia and Paul, to set up the system and tweak as we went along.

The M2 adaptor flips the image 180 degrees. This caused much head scratching as the live feed green screen monitor didn't flip so the image was still upside down. After several minuets Mambia came back with a correctly orientated image - he'd turned the monitor upside down. A low tech solution for a high tech problem.

The shoot went fine with Dip and Jags walking towards the screen then throwing themselves back as if by an explosion. All we have to do know is create that explosion !

Zombie Fest 2007

DWE were invited to show their short film version of Zombie Undead at the three day Zombie Fest 2007 and it went down a storm with Kris, Gav ( lead SFX ), and myself all there to witness it. The brain child of Terror4Fun the festival centers on a LRP ( Live Role Play), which means participants take on the role of a character, dress as and act as that character within scripted scenarios. 2007 saw Zombie Fest set in the village of Willard during the summer of 1977 and started with the traditional village fete and ended with a handful of survivors, loads of undead and gallons of blood. In addition to the LRP are zombie themed events such as archery and shooting. Other highlights were make up demonstrations by legend Stuart Conran ( Hellraiser, Shaun Of The Dead ) and films.

Day 01 - first production still !

Commencement of principal photography on Zombie Undead ! Goresome. The trails and tribulations of pre-production are over. Well not quite - the spread ouit nature of the project means pre, production and post are intertwined. But anyway back to the day. As one of the few external scenes we were blessed with great weather for this. The M2 adapter our DP uses eats of a stop or two of light so a wide shot on an overcast day would just not happen. As it was we got great light. Everything went to plan and we nailed the shots we needed. Our DP Neill did some acrobatics as he stationed himself precariously over a 10 foot drop to get the subway security camera shots. Awesome. Off to export the footage to the mac so Kris can get to work on the edit.

The Day Before

Shot List ready, crew and cast scheduled, we're all ready to go. Only a half day shoot tomorrow so a nice easy start to the filming. All external shots with just one cast member and a mobile crew. Its chronologically the first scene of the film which we will cut around the titles. An un-named bomber gets off a train, walks around crowded streets before planting his bomb, walking off then detonating it. We're gonna chop this up in the edit suite with time re-maps,hand crank and de-saturation to get that messed up look. This is going to be an awesome start.

Location Scout

The process of finding a suitable location for Zombie Undead started in earnest earlier this year. As i'm sure all directors do i had an ideal location in my head, an old Victorian style building with high ceilings and long wide corridors. Think turn of the century school, country hospital or sanitarium. Again the drawn out nature of the project and its low budget presented some problems. Firstly we needed a building that would be around for at least a year. The type of property we wanted seem to all be currently being chopped up into flats or demolished. As producer the first 6 months of the year were extremely frustrating for this reason. Secondly it needed to be in good condition, we needed to shoot in all weathers and have electricity. These reasons and more meant finding a location would be hard.

Of the many locations i scouted two stand out so far. This is Princess Marina in Northants:

A more modern build than is ideal for the project but a viable choice nether the less. The second option is the Derbyshire Miners Home. This is a great location which matches my ideas pretty damn close.

Well all good so far but ....A major downfall of each is where each location is. Northampton is not too far from Leicester but the mechanics and costs of getting cast and crew there on odd days over a drawn out period of shooting where too high. The Derbyshire Miners looked ideal but is based in ... Skegness. Go figure. Thanks must go to Em-Media who suggested these locations. Its just frustrating that each remainded just out of reach due to financial limitations.

After this initial round of scouting i turned closer to home. The ideal location came up after consultations with Leicester Regeneration and Claire Hudson at Creative Leicestershire. After a visit to the old Police station on Charles Street, Leicester i thought we'd got our location. Complete with safe, cells, lift and wood paneled superintendent office this was cool. However time was against us - as we speak the station is being made into flats.

Well all we can do is plough on. I'm a firm believer that these things happen to make way for a better option and our dream location will arrive.

The things which i found out thoughout this process which with hindsight would have come in handy were: Needs to be close to home, have electricity as generators cost to hire then you have ADR costs afterwoods, have cheap or no security costs.

Script Developments

Running at over 120 pages the first draft was a very different beast to later drafts both in content, style and length. Currently on the fourth draft its interesting to take time out and see the main ways the script has developed.

i) Characters merged and cut. This was particularly relevant to our film as it is low/no budget fare. Lack of budget necessitated a small cast.

ii) Setting Change - the setting for the film was altered fairly early on from a hospital setting to an evacuation center. The primary reason for this was budget. How to get props, costumes and a location which would look like a hospital ? This change forced upon us led to a tighter faster paced script with a greater social commentary angle- a happenstance of serendipity which seems to happen a lot around this film!

iii)
Ruling out any extravagances - Kris wrote to what we thought we could get and if we couldnt then ditched it.

iii) Shorter - over 40 pages have been cut in the script. This was something we knew would always happen and was achieved largely by the above. Dialog read through's also helped to get rid of any passages of dialog that were unnecessary to moving the film along.

So as we reach the fourth draft the script is leaner, faster and gorier.

Casting Process

Well before the script neared completion we had an idea of the main roles for Zombie Undead. The three leads of Jay, Sarah and Steve were present throughout all drafts with each changing relatively little during script amendments. Therefore earlier in the year it was these three roles that we wanted to cast first. They would carry the film and casting needed to be spot on.

One way a low/no budget film can create a buzz is to cast a known name. However from the start this was something I didn’t want to do. The nature of how we were to film Zombie Undead meant that it was over a protracted period of time. We figured that this may be problematic with cost and availability of known actors. Also as as my first feature I wanted the film to stand on its own merits. For it to be shot and edited to the highest standard, to have the best makeup and sound, and to stand out for these reasons not the fact that we h
ave a known name in the cast. The budget restrictions also meant their fee could be spent elsewhere. But hey Brad if you're available then contact us via the email below.

Therefore we needed to cast ‘unknowns’ - hey it worked for Peter Jackson. Shooting People was the obvious choice ( www.shootingpeople.com ) so we registered and had a look around. Saw a couple of possible choices and placed an ad. We also used the local talent from around Leicester. Luckily we have within the DWE team Kris Tearse. Its almost as if the role of Jay was written for him – in fact it was as Kris is also the screenwriter.

Second to be cast was Barry Thomas as Steve. Barry appeared in my first short film Prime Cut and has an awesome screen presence. Everyone who watched that film loved his understated yet powerful performance. Barry’s a big guy and generally gets offered roles of the gangster/bouncer/heavy types so he jumped at the chance to play Steve the paramedic in Zombie Undead, a role that imbues the film with dark humour.

Well that’s bought you up to date on the casting front. Of the main three two down and one to go.

The Script

Work began on the script for the feature length version of Zombie Undead early in 2007. From an original concept -working title of 'Zombie Hospital' - by Rhys Davies and Blake Goddard, screenwriter Kris Tearse of Dark Waters Entertainment wrote a first draft over a 5 week period. After this the process we adopted was for Kris to write a portion of the script which i would then read, annotate and give back. Discussions would ensue, agreements reached and changes made if necessary. This piecemeal approach allowed us a pretty quick turnaround from first draft to being close to a shooting script.

As i am both Director and Producer i found the needs of these two roles sometimes necessitated myself asking for honest opinions from others. For example as a Director there may be a scene which i think vital but as a Producer see it as beyond the budget. In these cases its allways good to get a second opinion - and be brutally honest about decisions that have to be made as to what is good for the film.

As the script developed we found that it was best to write full on. We know about
character and conflict, the three acts and dramatic structure paradigm but the important thing was to get the words on paper. Once that was done the changes could start and the project took on its own life. Procrastination definitly has no place in film making! If the first draft was never complete the film would never get made - simple as that.
